- 1 hard boiled egg
- Glass bottle with slightly smaller rim than egg - 8cm by 8cm piece of newspaper - Match |
Procedure1) Remove the egg from the shell.
2) Place the egg on the bottle to make sure it does not fall into it. 3) Fold the newspaper to create a measuring of 1cm by 8cm. 4) Remove the egg from the bottle and light the newspaper on fire with the math and quickly drop it into the water 5) Place the egg back in the bottle again 6) Watch it fall though! |
Scientific TheoryThe egg ends up fitting through the bottle due to the air pressure pushing it. At first, there was equal air pressure inside and outside of the bottle. When the newspaper was dropped inside, the air inside got heated up and the particles started to expand. The egg caused the fire to stop because it closed the opening of the bottle and prevented the air from escaping. Afterwards, the air inside the bottle starts to cool down. This is referred to a partial vacuum. Since the air contracts, the air inside is less dense than the air outside. In the bottle, the particles are far away from each other. Meanwhile, outside the particles are packed together. The higher air pressure ends up pushing the egg through the bottle!
