Materials- 1/2 cup of water
- 1 cup of cornstarch - something to mix with - bowl |
Procedure1) Take 1 cup of cornstarch and place it into a bowl.
2) Pour 1/2 cup of water into bowl 3) Mix with utensil. Afterwards, use hands to apply different forces. 4) Place an object inside and try taking it out with a strong and weak force. |
Sceintific TheoryThis is called a non Newtonian fluid. It is a liquid that acts upon the amount of force you use. When a great force is used, it turns into a solid. When a light force is used, it behaves like a liquid. You can pick up the mixture and make shapes out of it. However, when no force is applied, it started to melt and become a liquid. When the object was placed in quicksand, the more force you apply to get it out, the less likely you will be able to. If you gently try to remove it, the object will eventually come out. The molecules that make up quicksand are loosely arranged, which makes it behave like a liquid. But when pressure is applied, the molecules become packed together, which makes it behave as a solid.
