- 1 cup of water
-2 cups of sugar -a glass jar -string - pencil |
Prodecure1) Cut the piece of string depending on the height of the jar. Make sure the string hangs down to the middle of the jar.
2) Pour the cup of water in a pot and place it on medium heat until it comes to a boil. 3) Pour a quarter cup of sugar into the pot until it dissolves. Continue doing this until all of the sugar has dissolved. 4) Wet the string and roll it in sugar. 5) Pour the sugar into the jar. 6) Place the pencil on the opening on of the jar and let the string hang down. 7) Everyday, remove the crystals starting to from on the surface. Allow it to sit for a week until it is formalized. |
Scientific TheoryThe string needs to be soaked and placed in sugar before placing it into the jar because as the water evaporates, the crystals will begin to grow. This will create a starting point for the future growth. There are two scientific reasons to why there became crystals formed on the string. The first theory is that it became a supersaturated solution, which is when no more sugar can be dissolved by the solvent (water). It contains more solute (sugar), than the liquid. This way, the sugar will come out of the solution. The second theory is that as time passes, the water will evaporate from the solution. This will cause the sugar molecules to come out and begin to sediment and crystallize. The candy will eventually be made up of thousands and thousands of molecules!
