Floating Letters |
Materials |
|
- About 6-10 different colours of skittles or M&M's
- A bowl - Enough water to cover the candy ( couple inches) - A separate bowl full of water |
Procedure1) First, you are going to place your candies in a bowl with the letters facing upwards.
2) Afterwards, Pour the water slowly to prevent the candies from turning over. 3) Observe the water dissolving the candies. |
Scientific TheoryOnce the water was poured into the bowl, the sugars were absorbed by the water particles. Afterwards, the colour was removed from the candy which, created this dyed water. Since the colour was removed, the candy turned white. This caused the letters to start to float to the surface of the water. This is due to the letters being made of edible glue. This cannot be dissolved by water, forcing it to float in the water. Before the water was introduced. the letters were held on the candy because of the sugars. Since the sugar has dissolved, it is forced to leave. The letters begin to float due to density. Since it is less dense than the water, it can float.
